Dartmouth Round Table Discussion on "Healing America"

Over a period of 120 days, BuzzFlood ventures endeavored to bring a major Presidential Round Table Discussion on "Healing America From Head to Toe." Because of Dartmouth's location in the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire, the event was to be held on January 25, 2004. Originally scheduled to be hosted at Dartmouth College, the event was moved to the Lebanon Opera House, working in conjunction with Dartmouth College's Student Assembly after the first event was canceled by Dartmouth. Dr. C. Everett Koop and Professor Norm Ornstein were to be the panelists for the event.

The following are statements on the cancelation of the "Healing America Round Table Discussion."

Dartmouth College has some extraordinary students. I bet the school is quite proud of the fact that Dartmouth's students nearly organized a major roundtable discussion with Dr. Koop, Professor Norm Ornstein, and others. I would have been there. I commend both BuzzFlood and Dartmouth College's Student Assembly. I liked the fact that this roundtable was meant to discuss issues "above politics." It would have been historic, and I'm sorry the event was canceled...Moreover, even though the roundtable event was cancelled, the students involved demonstrated class by asking me to attend the women's issues forum. My reason for attending the women's issues forum was primarily based on the dedication these young folks showed throughout the process. Congratulations.

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Greetings,

I'm writing to thank you for your efforts in creating the roundtable discussion "Healing America." This election is about your future, and the America you will build in the coming years. The fact that the student body at Dartmouth is working so hard to engage their community in a discussion of hopes and concern's for tomorrow's America speaks volumes about the state of student activism today. I'm sorry the event was cancelled; I was eager to listen and learn from all of you. In any case, keep fighting, keep talking, and keep dreaming about an America that fulfills all of our ideals. Congratulations to Dartmouth College's Student Assembly, BuzzFlood, and the entire Dartmouth community for thinking big.

Warm Regards,

Senator John Kerry

Thank you to Dartmouth College's Student Assembly and BuzzFlood for all their efforts in setting up the roundtable discussion on "Healing America" with Dr. Koop and others on the 25th of January. Having a moral discussion "above politics" would have made the event different from the many other debates. It's hard to imagine that students were organizing this event--but I've come to expect that from innovative Dartmouth students. I confirmed my attendance to this event but did not attend because Dartmouth ended up canceling it. Thanks to BuzzFlood and Dartmouth College's Student Assembly for inviting me to the women's issues forum as well.Congratulations and best wishes.

Senator Joe Lieberman

I've built my campaign on a positive and optimistic vision for America. That's why I was excited to be invited to the round table discussion by Dartmouth College's Student Assembly and BuzzFlood- one of the nation's first student-run groups that promotes a positive message of "celebrating excellence." I would have liked to attend the "Healing America" round table discussion. I know how hard the students worked on this project. It would have been terrific; I'm sorry the event was cancelled. I've held two town hall meetings at Dartmouth and am impressed with the passion and activism of the students at the school.

Congratulations.

Senator John Edwards

Greetings,

I'm writing to praise Dartmouth College's Student Assembly, BuzzFlood, and the entire community of Dartmouth College. Your vision for a roundtable on Healing America on the 25th of January was unique. I wanted to be there, but once the event was cancelled, my schedule filled up quickly. Once again, thanks for your efforts.

General Wesley Clark

I would have attended but I'm sorry the event was cancelled. Congratulations for the efforts of Dartmouth College's Student Assembly and others involved in organizing this event-and for dreaming big.

Reverend Al Sharpton

I'm sorry to hear that the discussion at Dartmouth has been cancelled. I would love to participate should you schedule a similar event in the future. I thank you at Dartmouth for your efforts. There is little that is needed more right now than a discussion of how to heal America, the one wealthy nation that leaves millions of its citizens without health coverage while funding instead the extravagant salaries of executives of our proud unique possession: the for-profit health insurance industry. We are in such dire need of this discussion that when people hear about health care they ask how much it will cost without realizing we're already paying more than we need to - just not in the right way. Let's have this discussion.
