Senior Melanie Schorr (Suffield, Conn.), an All-America cross country runner, is Dartmouth's nominee for the 2005-06 Coca-Cola Community All-America national recognition award
Last fall, Schorr — who has a 3.96 GPA and majors in genetics — finished 22nd at the 2005 NCAA cross country championship. A three-time Academic All-Ivy selection, she has twice been named Academic All-America for cross country and was tabbed for last year's ESPN The Magazine women's cross country/track & field first team.
A Phi Beta Kappa honoree, Schorr is one of Dartmouth's Rufus Choate Scholars, an honor reserved for students in the top five percent of their class.
She is involved in numerous community service activities. A founding member and education chair of UNICEF, she was elected president this year. She is involved in Dartmouth's Women in Science Project peer mentor program and is a founder of the local Girls on the Run program.
Schorr also has volunteered at CHaD (Children's Hospital at Dartmouth) and tutored at the local Richmond Middle School.
A total of seven national Coca-Cola All-Americans will be honored. The announcement will be made at the annual NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) convention in late June. Honorees receive a $5,000 donation for the community/philanthropic cause of their choice.
Three other Dartmouth student-athletes were recognized as local Coca-Cola Community honorees. They include senior Ryan Danehy (No. Billerica, Mass.), who competes for the lacrosse and football teams; senior Christopher Mah (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), a member of the cross country/track & field teams; and senior Ann Scott (Colorado Springs, Colo.), co-captain of women's tennis.
