Posted at 03:08 AM - Students

Dartmouth CollegeThe Richardson H.Q. His staff feverishly prepared for the impending shift to New Hampshire. In the front office, Dave Imamura, a Dartmouth sophomore from Irvington, N.Y., who is heading Richardson efforts at New Hampshire colleges, put together binders detailing his candidate’s packed schedule.

“He is just going to campaign the hell out of this state,” said Mr. Imamura, who has been assigned to pick up Mr. Richardson at 1:20 a.m. from the Manchester airport. “It’s going to be ridiculous, I love Bill Richardson, and this is so much work, but it’s so rewarding.”

Dartmouth students plan online debate poll

Posted at 05:34 PM - Students

nullDartmouth College students will provide some immediate feedback about how the Democratic presidential contenders perform in tonight's much-anticipated debate on campus.

More than 450 students have registered to vote in online polls on an independent website, open-vote.com, created by two graduate students.

“Students deserve to have their voice heard, but traditional polling relies on home phones and leaves college students out entirely,” one of the founders, Colin Van Ostern, said in a statement. “It is amazing that with all the new technology and increased internet access in recent years, up until now there still has been no good way to see what a college campus thinks.”

Puzzle pieces fit at Harborfields

Posted at 11:23 AM - Students

Dartmouth CollegeThe Harborfields baseball team is no longer a big secret. These guys can play. But to make this team jell, coach Gene Rochler needs to strategically place his players in the right positions every game.

His pitching staff is deep. And when they're not on the hill, he needs them in the infield. It's like putting together a puzzle to put the best team on the field.

Smith is just one of the many leaders on this team. He scored a 2,150 on his SAT and will attend Dartmouth in September. When he's not on the field, he's spending his Sundays mentoring a youth group. More...

Come inside and breathe in the stale mustiness of a Dartmouth College dorm room. A couple of bunk beds occupy the far end, homemade shelves with plastic containers line portions of the walls, and, of course, the obligatory ancient couches are there.

(Photoby Meredith Raucher '06)For two weeks in June, a group of Dartmouth students, both Jewish and non-Jewish, from as far away as Mauritius and Nepal, traveled to the tiny, rural Ukrainian village of Zhuravnicki to take part in the fifth iteration of Project Preservation, a program created to honor and memorialize the European Jews lost to the Holocaust. In past years, Project Preservation has taken the form of restoring Jewish cemeteries abandoned by towns with no living Jews. This year, the group of 15 students, led by Rabbi Edward Boraz and Aine Donovan, executive director of Dartmouth's Ethics Institute, restored an abandoned Jewish cemetery and erected a memorial to honor and consecrate an unmarked mass grave where hundreds of Jews were murdered and buried by Nazis in September 1942. Inspiring Minds: New program Created to Honor K-12 Teachers

Posted at 12:17 AM - Students

Dartmouth CollegeNearly everyone remembers that teacher—the teacher whose enthusiasm and dedication lit a crucial spark or opened up a new direction. All too often, these special, memorable educators go unrecognized in a field that typically offers few material rewards. Under a new program developed by the College's Office of Student Life and the Department of Education, and jointly funded by the Offices of the President and Provost, Dartmouth students will be able to provide that recognition by nominating outstanding kindergarten through 12th grade teachers for an award to be presented at Dartmouth's commencement exercises.
